All my life my parents have been my first teachers in the Catholic Faith. But as a child I really never thought of entering the seminary or becoming a priest. Even having uncles in the priesthood didn’t give me such an interest. I continued my journey with God when my parents enrolled me at St. Patrick’s Parish in Rodeo to help me grow in my faith. During this time I was an active altar server in the parish. Unfortunately as I entered high school, my parents couldn’t afford for me to attend a Catholic high school. I attended public school, and didn’t have the religion classes to continue with my understanding of the values of the Catholic faith. My parents though were still there to help me in the faith and to encourage me to continue to be active as an altar server. When I was confirmed in my second year of high school, I felt that God had a purpose for me. I was asked by my Faith Formation Director, Beverly Pascua-Fung, to help start up the Youth ministry in the parish. Until today she has helped me in my spiritual and pastoral journey. During the time I was involved with Youth ministry, Confirmation, and Faith Formation I was on a journey to a career as a nurse. It wasn’t until my third year of high school that the first thought came to my mind of entering the seminary, but at the time I just ignored it. A couple years went by and I continued to be active in the parish and attending daily Mass. One day a friend of mine asked me if I ever thought of entering the seminary. As I was discerning the call of God, I remembered that I was talking to Beverly over lunch and she asked me how would I know if the priesthood was for me or not if I didn’t enter and see. I prayed about it and kept active in my various ministries and eventually the answer became much clearer for me. Now I’m in the seminary. I have learned so much about myself that I never knew before, and continue to learn about the Faith. Time will tell if it is God’s will for me to be a priest, but for now I have to listen to his call because of the happiness that I have seen so far in my time in the seminary.
